RECLAIMED WOOD STAIR TREADS

At Old World Timber, we understand that reclaimed wood stair treads are more than just functional pieces of wood; they are works of art. That is why we take the time to hand pick each piece of wood that we use to create our wood products and parts. We only use high quality wood so that our customers can be confident that their staircase will not only look beautiful, but will also last for generations. Our woodworkers are artists, and they take pride in creating wood treads with the utmost attention to detail. Whether you are looking for a simple and elegant design or something more ornate, we are confident that we can create the perfect wood stair parts for your home.

Wood Species We Use

When it comes to wooden stair treads, there are a variety of different wood species that can be used. The common wood species we used for our reclaimed wood stair treads are oak and mixed species. The mixed species include: White Oak, Red Oak, Hickory, Ash, Sycamore, Pine, Beachwood, Poplar, Chestnut, and Maple.

Each of these wood species has its own unique set of characteristics. We use oak because it is one of the strongest and most durable wood species that is often used in wood stair treads. Mixed species, on the other hand, can provide a more unique look to wood stair treads because of the different colors and grain patterns that are present in the wood.

Wood Stair Treads FAQs

If you want to place hardwood treads over an existing flight of steps, retrofitting stair treads is the simplest way. High-quality prefinished stair treads are made of solid edge-glued wood, not veneered or engineered wood, and can be used to “cap” or reface an existing tread.

Oak is one of the best timbers for stair treads. Oak hardwood floors and stair treads are extremely durable; many homes have oak flooring that is hundreds of years old.

Although 1″ stair treads are quite common and can be obtained at all big box home improvement stores, the normal thickness of a stair tread is up to 1-1/16″ of an inch. Keep in mind that stairwells must be a minimum of 10″ deep and 24″ wide. Many stores sell 34-inch-thick treads.

Consider covering the gaps with colored caulk if they aren’t too large. One advantage of this form of repair is that it is flexible enough to move with the steps. The caulking will move with the treads and risers if they continue to shift. It can also be used to silence squeaks and creaks.

There’s no one definitive answer to this question—it depends on the specific situation and materials involved. Generally speaking, nailing is better for thin materials (like stair treads) because screws can cause them to split. However, if the material is particularly strong or if there is a lot of weight bearing down on the stair treads, screws may be a better option. Always consult a professional before starting any home improvement project!

Don’t use just nails or staples to secure treads and risers. The adhesive is more significant than the fasteners. When fastening options are limited, a high-quality adhesive is important.
