UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

In the summer of 2018, we had the honor of sourcing and supplying our reclaimed Racehorse fence oak for the gigantic project at the University of Kentucky Gatton Student Center. The horse fence oak that is seen on the social staircase was sourced from the paddock fencing of some of the top thoroughbred farms in Kentucky’s infamous Horse Country.
The vast majority of Kentucky’s horse farms paint their fencing black. These premier red and white oak planks are repurposed by Old World Timber and transformed into various interior design products after years of wear and tear from weather and the elements, as well as chew marks from the horses that reside within them. The “clean face” look seen in this project comes from simply planning off a thin layer of these boards in order to show the wood’s natural interior. However, the nail holes, chew marks, and character from exposure to the elements all help display the history of this wood’s original usage. If you are ever in Lexington, Ky, definitely take a coffee break at UK’s Gatton Center, buy some Kentucky paraphernalia, and enjoy a moment next to UK’s mascot, Lazy Bowman, on the Old World Timber-sourced social staircase.
